SENATE
DISTRICT 59
CANDIDATES
TALK ISSUES

Corbett said that he supports S8783/A9802, the bill that would pave the way for ADU legalization; Crowley said that she’d support it “if we could show that these units are safe.”

Though all four contenders agreed that Rikers Island needs to be closed, more than any other issue, their views on public safety differ. (Corbett said that “public safety is the No. 1 issue that people talk about in this race.”)

Corbett agreed. “It’s not just about bail reform — it’s also making sure that we have services in the community, whether it’s afterschool programs, sports programs, arts programs, making sure that these are available.”

Mike Corbett, another centrist Democrat in the race who is also trying to position himself as the candidate of labor, said he would never have given campaign money to a company like that.

“That would betray everything I’ve been brought up on as a third-generation Teamster,” said Corbett, vice chair of the New York State Democratic Party and a former union mover. “We’re walking the walk, and we’re talking the talk, that’s what you’re going to get from me.”

STATE SENATE DISTRICT

Rounding out the race is Mike Corbett, who is from the Manhattan portion of the district. “So, the seat is actually in the neighborhood I’ve lived my entire life. I’m a life-long resident of Murray Hill. Live in the same tent stabilized apartment in which I grew up. This is a neighborhood I know very well. I went to public school here, played in the parks,” Corbett said.

WHAT
STATE SENATE
RACES TO WATCH GOING INTO THE AUGUST PRIMARY?

With the August 23 Democratic Primary a little less than a month away, much attention has been given to competitive Congressional races – like in the 10th District where a crowded field with several big-name candidates is vying to capture an open seat. But there are also several competitive state Senate races voters will get to weigh-in on during the late summer primary.
